A very warm welcome to the Waihora RFC.
As Club President I have had the pleasure of leading this Tai Tapu based club for the past 23 years.
I have been involved with the club at all levels, starting out as a 5 year old playing in the JAB through to senior grades. Over this time I have seen the club grow from strength to strength. I now enjoy watching my own children play for Waihora in the JAB grades.
Established in 1913 the Waihora RFC soon established itself as a leading club in the district. This reputation has only been enhanced over the years.
We are renowned for strong representation in the JAB grades and this year is no exception, with five U7 Ripper Teams and at least one team representing the Club in all grades.   Many of our very successful senior level players have, like me, progressed from these grades.
Over recent years the Club has performed exceptionally well at a senior level, with many of our teams finishing at the Top of the Table. With this comes success for many individuals who have gone on to achieve great things at a representative level.  Please read testimonials from two such players following this welcome.
At Waihora I believe we have the best of both worlds … a true country club located only minutes from town.
I invite you to come and see for yourself.

Player Testimonials

“After finishing school in the Wairapapa I decided to attend Lincoln University. On the lookout for a local rugby club, I stumbled upon Waihora - only 7 minutes drive from the University and 15 minutes from the centre of Christchurch.  Coming from a country background, I was keen continue to play country rugby. Waihora welcomed me with open arms and I soon realised this was the club for me. What sold it to me was not just the high level of rugby, but just as importantly, the atmosphere in the club

In my first year I was selected for the local Ellesmere Representative side and this was my foot in the door. In the following years I was selected for Canterbury Country, then for Canterbury 'B' before finally reaching my dream, making the Canterbury ITM squad. I have no doubt that the backing I had from Waihora had a huge influence on me making this team. The club and senior coaches were very pro-active in promoting me as a player.
I strongly suggest you head to Tai Tapu and play for the Waihora Magpies. Not only are they strong on the Field, but equally as strong off the field."

“I've played for Waihora since I was 7 years old. I've had some great times growing up and playing here, going through my teenage years learning and developing my skills, through my early twenties further enhancing my skills and striving to reach my potential. Now I gain great satisfaction in seeing the club cater to and support my own family.  The camaraderie amongst the club is second to none. The club has real and strong values.   The environment encourages performance with a winning culture - there is no better feeling than belting out our victory song in the changing sheds.

Personally I've played over 100 games for this senior team, and with the clubs support, they've helped me achieve higher honours – I have  now I've earned my blazer for Ellesmere and Canterbury Country representative sides.

Sometimes I wish I had a dollar for every time I'd heard a new player arrive and say " I wish I'd come out here earlier" -. I suppose I'm one of the lucky ones that did arrive early!
